This simple project was done as a demonstration for Science Club. We were discussing how a speaker works. In fact, all movement due to electricity is caused by the same effect: the interaction of a moving charge in a magnetic field.

In this case, the electric current is moving from the positive end of the battery, through the wire, to the magnet and into the negative end of the battery. The current creates a magnetic field around the wire which interacts with the magnetic field of the magnet.

This is a common set up for a simple homopolar motor. It takes only a AA battery, a piece of wire and a neodymium magnet. I overcame the common problem of the wire slipping off the battery as it spins by putting a rim of hot glue around the positive terminal of the battery.
