Classification of Living Organisms (Basic science review)

Living organisms are classified based on a system first developed by Carl Linnaeus in the 1700s.

Viruses are not included in this organization.

The typical structure memorized by students is:

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species

The order of these is remembered with the mnemonic:

“Kings Play Chess On Fine Glass Sets”
